Dr. Gary Friedman began his formal training to become a plastic surgeon in 1956. He earned both his Bachelor of Science degree and his medical degree from Ohio State University. Dr. Friedman went on to complete his internship at Mount Zion Hospital and Medical Center in San Francisco, general surgery residency at Marquette University, and a plastic surgery residency at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco. He also served as a flight surgeon in Vietnam.
Now a top board certified plastic surgeon in the Bay Area, Dr. Friedman began his private plastic surgery practice in the Bay Area in 1973. After first building a solid foundation in general and reconstructive plastic surgery, he decided to focus his attention entirely in the area of cosmetic surgery. To remain on the cutting edge as a plastic surgeon, he has continually upgraded his knowledge and honed his skills with the latest proven techniques in plastic surgery, including endoscopic forehead rejuvenation, laser skin resurfacing, and ultrasonic liposuction.
Dr. Gary Friedman has received the American Medical Association's Physician Recognition Award in Continuing Medical Education for each two-year period that it has been presented since 1977. He has been awarded the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) Certificate of Advanced Education in Cosmetic Surgery, and has been named in Strathmore's Who's Who as a select member of distinguished, board certified plastic surgeons.
Dr. Friedman has also devoted additional time and energy to teaching other plastic surgeons, lecturing on the latest techniques in plastic surgery and authoring numerous articles and chapters in various professional publications. He held a clinical instructor position at Saint Francis Hospital from 1973 to 1998, and also served as Chief of Plastic Surgery for 10 years each at two major San Francisco hospitals.
Plastic Surgery Credentials
A great deal of confusion surrounds plastic surgery credentialing because of all of the self-appointed "Plastic Surgery Boards" that have sprung up in recent years. A doctor may call himself a board certified plastic surgeon, without having completing the rigorous training many associations require.
The AMA created the American Board of Medical Specialists (ABMS) in 1933 for the purpose of establishing medical specialty boards. Only the strictest criteria and qualifications were to be considered for board certification. The ABMS then established the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1937, and it remains the only plastic, cosmetic, or aesthetic surgery board recognized by the ABMS, as well as the AMA.
Dr. Friedman was credentialed by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1975 and continues to maintain the highest standards of excellence set by the Board. He has the additional distinction of belonging to the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and well as being a member of numerous other medical societies and associations for San Francisco, California, and the nation.
